The Caribbean Series is underway which is a better sign that spring is around the corner than any groundhog will give you.

Tonight's contest between Mexico and Venezuela featured Rodrigo Lopez on the mound for Mexico. Through six innings he was masterful, allowing just two hits which included a home run in the third. He would retire every batter after that.  Lopez has proven to be quality depth in the past and that could definitely come into play this season for the Phillies. Lopez is the only current player with the Phillies organization playing in the Caribbean Series.

Doesn't mean some familiar faces can't be seen. Former outfielder Chris Roberson can be seen playing some stellar defense. Marlon Byrd, who just signed with the Mets, is also with Mexico right now. Playing for Venezuela is Joe Thurston who had a second tour of duty in the Phillies system last year. Thurston best remembered for subbing for a benched Pat Burrell in '05 or '06 I believe.

I enjoy the Caribbean Series. It's an unusual mix of major league talent, young players trying to make a name for themselves, and a few well traveled vets trying to hang on for a little while longer. It can be seen through the week on ESPN Deportes.
