Pregame: Phillies Begin the Final Lap

Well we're in territory we haven't been in lately. Unless the Phillies win out and a bunch of people lose, the smart money is on the notion that they are playing the final 9 games. Sharing that idea could possibly be Charlie Manuel as he calls on Darin Ruf to make his first major league start in LF. We've only seen a few pinch hit ABs so far so this is the first extended look we'll get for the Eastern League MVP.

Meanwhile the hot stove has heated up a bit early too with various outfield options for next season. Michael Bourn is a popular name but Cody Ross is in the mix too. It's not exactly foolish to add Shane Victorino to the list either. After a fairly poor season, odds of him landing the big money contract of the off season have slipped.

As for tonight, Cole Hamels takes to the hill for his final home start against Ross Detwiler and the Nationals. What can you say about the Nats? They've played great baseball all season and seem like favorites going into the postseason. Just the kind of team begging for defeat at the hands of the second wildcard winner. As for Hamels, he's turned in a great season.  To see how he's developed and matured since he first broke in is incredible.

Line Up: Rollins 6 , Mayberry 8, Utley 4, Howard 3, Ruiz 2, Brown 9,  Ruf 7,  Frandsen 5, Hamels 1
