Cole Hamels continued his red-hot season tonight at Citi Field, recording double-digit strikeouts in an outstanding effort which he would later receive the no-decision for. The offense showed up a little late tonight, long after Mets' starter Matt Harvey left the ballgame.
Jimmy Rollins started off this ballgame against Matt Harvey doing what he does best. Jimmy launched a lead-0ff solo home run on a 3-1 count. He got the green light for his 22nd home run of the season. His season high is 30, set in 2007.
Cole was looking sharp as always tonight. However, he would allow a run to score in the third. Ruben Tejada scored on a single from Daniel Murphy. Murphy has been a Phillies killer all season with a .343 average and 23 RBI against this team.
In the bottom of the sixth with the game still tied at 1, David Wright shot a solo home run to the seats in right-center field. 2-1 Mets.
Cole Hamels was still dealing, despite the two runs he allowed. Through six innings, Cole had recorded ten strikeouts, allowing just two runs on six hits, and walking one. Cole reached 200 strikeouts on the season tonight, this is the second time he's done this in his career. After those six innings and 110 pitches (70 for strikes), Cole's night was done. Another marvelous performance.
Jimmy's home run in the first inning was surprisingly the Phillies' only hit through seven innings. Matt Harvery was silencing the Phils tonight.
Antonio Bastardo pitched 2/3 of the seventh, striking out two and walking one. Justin De Fratus struck out one and retired the side in the final 1/3.
John Mayberry hit a bloop single in the top of the eighth which marked the Phillies' first hit since the homer. Sadly, Mayberry wouldn't make it across the plate in the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Phillippe Aumont allowed two hits and struck out one, which was his only out recorded. With runners on the corners, Jeremy Horst came in and recorded a double play to end the inning and keep it a 2-1 ballgame.
The stellar pitching tonight left it up to the Phillies' lineup to win this ballgame. In the top of the ninth, two outs were quickly recorded before Chase Utley walked. After that, Ryan Howard absolutely crushed a ball, sending it to the seats in right field. Just like that, the Phils took a 3-2 lead.
Jonathan Papelbon closed it out for the Phillies and was backed up by some wonderful defense. Phillies take game two, 3-2.
Tomorrow night's game will be the makeup game from last night's washout. Tyler Cloyd will be taking the mound for the Phillies at 7:10 in what should be a sweep!
