For the Second Trading Deadline, Shane Victorino Replaces Bobby Abreu as Dodgers Part Ways With Outfielder
It is 2006 all over again.
At the trading deadline in 2006, the Phillies sent outfielder Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to the New York Yankees for no one that ever made a difference in Philadelphia. The move was made so that Shane Victorino could join the starting lineup, where he would go on to win three gold gloves and make two All-Star games.
Today, the Los Angeles Dodgers made room for Shane Victorino both in left field and on the roster by designating Bobby Abreu for assignment.
Another interesting thing: Dodgers manager Don Mattingly wore number 23 throughout his legendary career with the New York Yankees, now retired in New York. In Los Angeles, he wore number 8 as 23 was taken. Today he yielded number 8 to Shane Victorino, reportedly offering Mattingly to be able to use his house in Maui.
Designating Bobby Abreu for assignment today opened up Mattingly's usual number 23. I would bet that he takes it, despite original plans for Mattingly to wear number 12.
Victorino will be the Dodgers' leadoff hitter. Leading off never worked for Shane in Philadelphia, but good luck to him.
