The Pros and Cons of the Flyers’ Shea Weber Offer Sheet
By now I am sure we all know that the Flyers have sent a massive 14 year, $110 Million Dollar offer sheet to Shea Webber of the Nashville Predators. Now, while signing one of, if not the best, defensemen in the league would be a great addtion to a Philadelphia Flyers team with an aging Kimmo Timonen, this would also be an amazing 7.8 million dollar cap hit.
All of this is happening while we still haven't resigned RFA Jakub Voracek who had a great season last year and after losing Jagr and JVR this would be a another big loss for the Flyers' offense. The Flyers currently have around 13 million in cap space and that is not including Chris Prongers cap hit which is 4.5 Million. so in total that is almost 18 million dollars in cap space. This could potentially be a positive because if Shea Weber does become a flyer even with his cap hit we would still have 11 million in cap space when the season starts.
Another alternative to the cap space problem, if we were to have one, would be to trade RFA's Voracek and Bourdon among other players and picks for Anahiem's Bobby Ryan. Ryan has been doing nothing other than requesting a trade to the Flyers and he would be a great asset to our team especially being from Cherry Hill and wanting to come back home.
So while we could lose Voracek, who is blossoming after last season does Holmgren really want to do the same thing he did with JVR and sign him to a deal only based off of potential or would he rather trade for an already proven winger who would more than likely excell being on the same team with an all star like Claude Giroux.
All of this will be answered within the next five days in which Nashville has to match the Flyers offer or let Shea Weber Walk.
