Blue Jays Use Six Pitchers to Shut Out Phillies, 3-0

Lawrie

Oh, Canada. The Blue Jays have been very unlucky this past week with the loss of Brandon Morrow due to a left oblique strain, and Kyle Drabek with a torn UCL. Both are on the 15-day DL as of right now, but both injuries are likely substantial. As if losing two starters isn't bad enough, another bit the dust tonight in the first inning. Drew Hutchinson headed to the clubhouse with two outs with an apparent elbow injury.

The Vanimal already had his turn on the oh-so-popular disabled list this year. He looked excellent tonight in Toronto going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 5.

In the bottom of the third, third baseman Brett Lawrie doubled home Rajai Davis, putting the Jays on the board.

Mike Fontenot made a terrible throw to second in the fourth inning. With Jose Bautista on second, he was able to score when Edwin Encarnacion hit into a fielder's choice. Fontenot's throw was WAY too wide. Encarnacion was later sent home on a groundout from Yunel Escobar.

Meanwhile, the Phillies' offense was doing a whole lot of nothin'. They also received their share of bad news: Carlos Ruiz left the game in the sixth inning with a left oblique strain. He grabbed his side after striking out. Not good news at all.

Michael Schwimer pitched an inning of relief in the eighth for Vance Worley. He allowed a lead-off double, but got a strikeout-throw out double play, and a fly-out to left to end the inning.

That would be all for this ballgame. The Jays used a total of six pitchers to shut out the Phils tonight, 3-0. Phillies are still nine games back.

1:07 game tomorrow afternoon in the second of this series. Cliff Lee takes the hill for the Phils seeking his first win of the season.
