Flyers Draft Pick Scouting Report: Day 2 Picks
By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor
The Flyers entered Day 2 with eight picks, but ended up adding six prospects after making a couple of Day 2 trades.
The Flyers day started by trading up with the Nashville Predators to the 34th overall pick, sending the 45th and 65th overall picks to Nashville. With the pick, they selected winger Bobby Brink.
In the third round with the 72nd overall pick, the Flyers selected defenseman Ronald Attard. In the fourth round, the Flyers picked defenseman Mason Millman at 103rd overall.
The Flyers had two more picks in the sixth round, choosing forward Egor Serdyuk at 165th overall and goalie Roddy Ross with the 169th overall pick.
The Flyers also had two picks in the seventh round, but only used one, taking forward Bryce Brodzinski with the 196th pick. They traded the 201st overall pick to Montreal for a 2020 seventh-round pick, marking the third straight season that has happened.
Now that you know the names, here are scouting reports on the six new prospects.
Bobby Brink, RW (Round 2, 34th overall) – For fans who wanted the Flyers to go with Cole Caufield at 14th overall, this is a great move to go up and get a very similar player. Brink is just 5'8" and 160 pounds, but he scored 35 goals in 43 games and seemed to raise his game in bigger stakes.
He is very much like Alex DeBrincat, a prospect who had similar concerns to what Brink has. Brink is not a great skater, but he makes up for it with his incredible offensive skills. And it's not like his skating greatly drags him down, it's just not polished and smooth. He needs to work on that no question. But everything else about his game is very complete. He's got great pucks skills, a great release on his shot, and in areas where his skating doesn't get it done, his compete level does.
He's a player who may think the game faster than he can move, and that kind of combination of skill, smarts and scoring ability make this a great value pick. Brink has also drawn comparisons to Jake Guenztel and was easily a first-round pick if the skating weren't an issue. We were saying that about another Flyers prospect not long ago who figures to be at least a big part of the Phantoms next season: Isaac Ratcliffe. The Flyers traded up to get him too.
Ronald Attard, D (Round 3, 72nd overall) – Attard was an exceptional offensive defenseman in his third season in the USHL, scoring 30 goals and 65 points and taking home Defenseman and Player of the Year for the league. He's simply always looking to jump into the play and make an impact offensively, the kind of mobile defenseman that teams love.
His shot is great and he has a strong one-timer. His skating isn't the best, but gets the job done. He does need work on defense as well, in terms of better positioning and maintaining it instead of chasing the play. His consistency needs to improve as well. This makes him more of a project than the other picks the Flyers made in this draft, but the upside is there and it could be big if he reaches it.
Mason Millman, D (Round 4, 103rd overall) – Millman had 25 points in 66 games for the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL, but that's not what helped him become a fourth-round selection. Millman is a physical and competitive player, very willing to engage in contact. He was certainly more of a defensive specialist and played well in that role, making great reads and anticipating well. In the situations where he was beaten by the opposition, he was quick to recover.
He's not an offensively-gifted player, but has his moments, and is solid at being mobile to get the puck out of the zone. He'll need to develop a lot and really round out his game, but this was a solid value pick in the middle rounds.
Egor Serdyuk, RW (Round 6, 165th overall) – Serdyuk was the top rookie scorer in the QMJHL with 25 goals and 65 points in 63 games. He's got a sniper quality to him. His best attribute is his shot and his goal-scoring ability. He just finds a way to get the puck through and make plays around the net.
Serdyuk also has a smart quality to his game and despite not being a big player, uses his size well to protect the puck. He's also not the best skater and operates at the same speed a lot, but competes well and that helps him. As a sixth-round pick, this is a prospect that could make some waves with his scoring ability to move through the ranks, but remains a question if he ever makes it to the NHL.
Roddy Ross, G (Round 6, 169th overall) – The Flyers tend to take a goalie every year and this year was no different. Roddy Ross is an athletic netminder with the ability to make some highlight-reel saves with his movement across the crease. He looks strong in pressure situations and can get locked into games where he becomes a brick wall. But like most goalies, he's raw and needs to work on his technical game. His positioning isn't always perfect, but with some training, he can fit in nicely in the Flyers pipeline of goalies.
Bryce Brodzinski, RW (Round 7, 196th overall) – Brodzinski is a good shooter and can go to the net well. He's got good hands, but doesn't use them all the time. He's a really raw prospect that is going to need a lot of work, listed as a center but likely to be a winger in the future. His skating is the biggest red flag in his game and that can hold him back from advancing.
