Two-time All-Star reliever Pat Neshek is headed to Philadelphia and the injured list.
After the club's 6-4 road series opener win Friday evening against the Milwaukee Brewers, Phillies Manager Gabe Kapler told reporters that the 13-year veteran experienced right shoulder pain when throwing earlier in the day.
Neshek, 38, will travel home for testing. Earlier, NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reported that Neshek was not in the bullpen as of the sixth inning in Friday's game, despite being on the field earlier with other relievers; Neshek reportedly had left the field "looking distressed."
Update, 5/25: The Phillies placed Neshek on the 10-day injured list (right shoulder strain; retroactive to May 24).
Neshek's injury may have preceded the weekend series opener, however; 97.3 ESPN's Frank Klose writes:
Neshek was warming on Monday night against the Chicago Cubs. However, he was unable to enter the game, the Phillies had to rely on Seranthony Dominguez for an extra inning they did not count on, and the Phillies ultimately lost the game. Thursday, Neshek reappeared. But he was not sharp, allowing three earned runs before being lifted without completing an inning.
The Phillies top-three highest paid relievers, David Robertson, Tommy Hunter and Neshek, will now all be on the injured list, NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman noted on Phillies Postgame Live. Through 19 appearances this season, Neshek has allowed 10 runs (9 earned) while striking out just nine of his 75 batters faced spanning 17 1/3 innings.
