One week after being designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies, outfielder Aaron Altherr was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, as first reported by MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic writes:
The Giants have not yet announced the transaction, so there is no corresponding move yet, but there are a couple of options. The most likely seems to be giving Brandon Belt time to rest an inflamed knee that required an MRI on Friday night, with Tyler Austin moving to first base. If that's not the move, it's hard to see how Altherr immediately fits.
Update, 5:40 p.m.: The Giants made the transaction official, also announcing the following: RHP Andrew Moore designated for assignment, C Erik Kratz activated from the 10-day injured list. RHP Dereck Rodríguez optioned to AAA Sacramento.
The Giants' designation of Moore made room for Altherr on the 40-man roster.
Altherr, 28, collected just one hit, a double, in 29 at-bats this season; combined with last season, he slashed just .165/.273/.305 with 21 extra-base hits over his last 272 at-bats in a Phillies uniform. The Landstuhl, Germany, native's best season in red pinstripes came in 2017, when he slugged 19 home runs and 65 RBI in just 107 games.
