The Philadelphia Phillies, who are set to begin their six-game homestand, April 5-10 against the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals, could soon be getting back some much-needed speed for the basepaths.
Outfielder Roman Quinn, who landed on the 10-day injured list at the end of spring training with a right oblique strain, is progressing on a return, which could be as soon as the current homestand.
Quinn, 25, is scheduled to play back-to-back, nine-inning games Saturday and Sunday in Clearwater, The Athletic's Meghan Montemurro reports, adding that Phillies Manager Gabe Kapler said it "wouldn’t be shocking" if Quinn returns for the Monday-Wednesday series against the Nationals.
Quinn first suffered an oblique strain back in late February, and played only two games in official Grapefruit League action. In five at-bats, he collected a run scored, two singles, and one walk, while also stealing one base (.400/.500/.400).
The Phillies have just one stolen base through five games in the regular season. Last season, the club swept only 69 bases, the fourth-fewest in the National League. Quinn accounted for 10 of the total, despite playing in just 50 games.
When Quinn returns, he likely will replace outfielder Aaron Altherr on the 25-man roster. Altherr is out of minor-league options, however, and would likely be claimed by another team off waivers before joining Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Altherr has struck out in two of his three pinch-hit plate appearances this season (.000/.000/.000).
