Bohm, Medina, Sanchez Rank Among MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects

With the baseball season near, MLB Pipeline released its Top 100 Prospects list on Saturday. The San Diego Padres had the most prospects featured (10), followed by the Atlanta Braves (8), Chicago White Sox (6),  Tampa Bay Rays (6) and Houston Astros (6).

Three Philadelphia Phillies prospects made the Top 100 list: RHP Sixto Sanchez (27th-best), third baseman Alec Bohm (59th) and RHP Adonis Medina (77th).

The Phillies had one of the richest farm systems in baseball in the recent past, with a height of seven Top 100 prospects in 2016 and six on last year's list. With a young big league roster, there isn't as much pressure on the system to get guys to the big leagues, but Sanchez and Medina could take big steps forward in terms of health and consistency in 2018, giving the organization the chance to have two of the top right-handed pitching prospects in the game approach Philadelphia at around the same time. Sanchez and Medina, who were also on last year's Top 100 together, give the Phillies their best 1-2 pitching prospect combination since Cole Hamels and Gavin Floyd were in the top 15 back in 2004.

Bohm, 22, posted a .252/.335/.324 combined slash in his first professional season in 2018, slugging for six doubles, a pair of home runs and 17 RBI spanning 40 games and 158 plate appearances. Bohm was drafted third overall in the first round of last June's draft. Bohm played for the GCL Phillies East and West, as well as the Williamsport Crosscutters.

Medina, 22, tossed 22 appearances and 21 starts last season with the Clearwater Threshers, posting a 10-4 record, 4.12 ERA, 123-36 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.249 WHIP over 111 1/3 innings. Medina was among the three prospects the Phillies added to their 40-man roster in November to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.

Sanchez, 20, appeared in just eight games this past season with the Threshers due to injury. Over 46 2/3 innings, Sanchez went 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA and 45-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Sanchez was slated to appear in the Arizona Fall League, however he was pulled due to still recovering from right elbow inflammation.

Sanchez and Bohm were ranked the 13th and 65th-best prospects on Baseball America's top 100 prospects list, released on Wednesday. The 18-year-old Luis Garcia placed 88th, however he did not appear on MLB Pipeline's recently released list.

Last season, MLB Pipeline ranked Sanchez, Bohm and Medina as the Phillies' best, second-best, and third-best prospects. An updated list of the Phillies top prospects for 2019 will be released next month.
