Halladay’s Hall of Fame Plaque Will Not Feature Blue Jays, Phillies Cap

Immediately after the late Roy Halladay was announced as among the 2019 Hall of Fame class, speculation began as to which team's cap the two-time Cy Young Award winner's plaque would feature — the Toronto Blue Jays or Philadelphia Phillies.

Halladay played in 12 seasons and 313 games with the Blue Jays from 1998 to 2009, and four seasons and 103 games with the Phillies from 2010 to 2013. Although he won a Cy Young Award with each team, Halladay logged 148 wins, 49 complete games and 15 shutouts with Toronto. Thus, it was assumed that the Halladay Family would surely choose the Blue Jays' cap rather than the Phillies'.

As it turns out, Halladay's plaque will feature neither, "out of respect for Toronto and Philly, two cities he loved," according to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury.

"We think, we talked about this, this is the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. It's not the Phillies Hall of Fame, it's not the Blue Jays Hall of Fame," Roy's wife, Brandy, said. "Roy's going in as a Major League Baseball player, and I think that's important and that's what he is. And I hope that he represents something to all of baseball, not just the Phillie fans or Blue Jay fans, but to baseball as a whole."

"And that's how I think he should be represented there."

Halladay said in August 2016 that he would go into the Hall of Fame as a Blue Jay, contradicting his family's decision nearly 30 months later.

The Hall of Fame released the following statement regarding the decision:

The Hall of Fame provides guidance to inductees as to which logo, if any, may be depicted on an electee's plaque cap. While the Hall of Fame has the final say as to which logo, if any, is included, we work with the electee to reach an appropriate conclusion. This family decision was made in concert with the Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame plaque, which serves to reflect the totality of a career in baseball, details an individual's accomplishments in the game while listing each team for which an individual played.

The 2019 induction ceremony will take place on July 21 in Cooperstown, New York. Halladay received 85.4 percent of the vote, 10.4 percent above the Hall of Fame-clinching threshold.
