Could Philadelphia Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton's pledge to spend "stupid money" extend beyond this offseason?
The Phillies — "regardless who they sign this winter" — will make a "big play" for seven-time All-Star and two-time Most Valuable Player outfielder Mike Trout, if available in free agency once his current contract expires following the 2020 season, according to Jon Heyman.
Heyman tweeted that while the Los Angeles Angels this offseason will "try to extend" Trout — who likes the Angels — existing "whispers" suggest that doing such successfully would be "unlikely."

Trout, 27, has logged 240 home runs and 648 RBI through eight seasons thus far in the majors. The Millville, New Jersey, native is set to earn just over $34 million in each of the next two seasons.
