With the annual Winter Meetings set to get underway one week from Sunday on December 9 — amid already existing trade and free agency rumors — surely moves are bound to occur, especially with the Philadelphia Phillies ready to spend big.
The Phillies might make at least one move before then, however, and it does not involve possibly acquiring Jean Segura from the Seattle Mariners.
According to El Sol de Margarita's Juan Vené, several Major League executives believe that Manny Machado will sign with the Phillies — and Bryce Harper with the Washington Nationals — possibly within the next week.
Of these executives, none were affiliated with the Phillies, Nationals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees or Los Angeles Dodgers.
Vené writes that Machado has received offers from "no less than nine teams," including the Phillies (English translation):
The Nationals and the Phillies have money available in good numbers and the need to get into the postseason. What is not clear is whether these two organizations have as many millions as the agents demand.
Harper and Boras have rejected two big offers from the Nationals, one for 300 million for 10 years and the other for 200 million for five seasons.
The interiors of Machado and "MVP Sport Group" are less known, but it is known that they have dealt with offers from no less than nine teams, including the Phillies.
Just two weeks ago, Vené wrote that the Phillies were "no longer interested" in signing Machado, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner. Vené cited that Phillies manager Gabe Kapler did not think — at least at the time — that signing Machado would be ideal, given the organization has a group of young players "who require good examples in the field of play."
Perhaps with Machado recently clarifying his "Johnny Hustle" comment, the Phillies have regained their longstanding interest in the perennial All-Star infielder.
