Report: Phillies, D-backs Discussed Paul Goldschmidt Trade

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Philadelphia Phillies are truly interested in everyone.

According to The Athletic's Jayson Stark, the club recently discussed a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks centered around six-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger and three-time Gold Glove awards winner, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

To acquire the eight-year veteran, the Phillies reportedly discussed a package that would have included Zach Eflin and "several young players," per Stark, however the deal fell through when the club "tried to add Carlos Santana."

Goldschmidt, 31, has 267 career doubles, 209 home runs, 710 RBI and a .297/.398/.532 slash over 1,092 games. Native to Wilmington, Delaware, Goldschmidt has never fielded a position other than first base in his career. Hence, Rhys Hoskins likely would have remained in the outfield if Goldschmidt were acquired.

Goldschmidt surely would have been a power-bat addition to the middle of the Phillies lineup, as he has finished in the top-11 of MVP voting five times in his career. He will earn $14.5 million in 2019, and will enter free agency next offseason.

The Phillies will likely continue to explore trades of Santana, although it probably will not be to the Grand Canyon State.
