Philadelphia Phillies INF/OF Pedro Florimon cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, according to The Morning Call's Tom Housenick.
Update, 11/3: Florimon has elected free agency, rather than accept his Triple-A assignment.
Florimon, 31, missed most of the 2018 season due to fracturing his right foot in late May. In 65 games in red pinstripes over the last two seasons, Florimon slashed .274/.320/.444 with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBI, eight walks and 46 strikeouts spanning 125 plate appearances. Florimon has played in parts of eight Major League seasons overall since 2011, with the most time spent with the Minnesota Twins from 2012-2014.
The Phillies' 40-man roster now stands at 35 players — 20 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and six outfielders. Having ample 40-man roster space at this point in the offseason is beneficial for two reasons — to protect minor-leaguers from being seleted in the Rule 5 draft, and to sign free agents without having to designate any current player to make room.
