The Flyers tipped their hand that more roster moves were coming when a noticeable group of players did not participate in the non-game participants practice on Friday. Sure enough, five players were placed on waivers for the purpose of sending them to the minors.
Forwards Cole Bardreau, Greg Carey, Phil Varone and Danick Martel as well as defenseman T.J. Brennan were placed on waivers on Friday. Martel was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning while the other four cleared, bringing the Flyers roster to 36 players.
Bardreau is entering his fourth season with the Phantoms. He scored 11 goals and had 30 points in 45 games last season. He has 34 goals and 86 points in 186 AHL games. Bardreau signed with the Flyers as an undrafted free agent in 2015.
Carey enters his third season with the Phantoms. He scored 31 goals and had 53 points in 72 games last season. In his first two seasons with the Phantoms, Carey has 59 goals and 104 points in 146 games. Carey signed with the Flyers during free agency in 2016. He has 88 goals and 155 points in 252 career AHL games.
Varone is entering his second season with the Phantoms. He scored 23 goals and had 70 points in 74 games. Varone signed with the Flyers during free agency in 2017. He has 112 goals and 368 points in 466 career AHL games.
Martel would have been entering his fourth season with the Phantoms. He scored 25 goals and had 40 points in 59 games last season. He has 68 goals and 120 points in 199 AHL games. Martel signed with the Flyers as an undrafted free agent in 2015.
Brennan is entering his third season with the Phantoms. He scored 14 goals and had 45 points in 63 games last season. Since joining the Phantoms, Brennan has scored 35 goals and has 105 points in 139 games. In 582 career AHL games, Brennan has scored 148 goals and has 424 points.
The Phantoms open their camp on Sunday, so decisions involving players heading to the Phantoms were expected.
The Flyers continue the preseason on Monday night against the Boston Bruins at Wells Fargo Center at 7 p.m.
