Flyers Strike for 3 Quick Goals in 2nd, Defeat Islanders

After playing a lot of veterans in Monday's win at Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers sent a number of AHL veterans and prospects to Brooklyn for Tuesday's game against the Islanders.

For many of these players, a trip to the Phantoms is likely soon enough, but they showed their skill as well in a 5-1 win over the Islanders on Tuesday night at Barclays Center.

There wasn't much in terms of quality offensive chances through the first half of the opening period. At 13:24, the Flyers were able to break the ice.

James de Haas took a shot from the high slot that beat Robin Lehner through the five-hole to put the Flyers on the board.

The Flyers held the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Shots were 12-11 Islanders.

The Islanders came out in the second period with more of a push. As the game neared the halfway point, the Islanders continued to generate pressure, drew a penalty and finally capitalized during a long period of 6-on-5 play during the delayed penalty.

David Quenneville was set up for a one-timer and beat Anthony Stolarz to tie the game at one at 8:12.

The Flyers got the lead back at 12:56. Carsen Twarynski carried the puck into the zone and fired a shot bar down to make it 2-1.

Less than three minutes later, the Flyers were on a delayed penalty call and struck for another goal as Phil Varone hopped off the bench as the extra-attacker and snapped a shot past Lehner to make it a two-goal game. 

Just over a minute later, Danick Martel scored on a two-on-one to make it a 4-1 game.

The Flyers took that lead into the break after two periods, with the Islanders holding a 24-22 lead in shots.

Chances were fairly limited in the third period until the late stages of the game when Jori Lehtera knocked a backhander into the net for a goal to make it 5-1 and cap the scoring in the game.

Stolarz got the start and played the entire game after Alex Lyon left warmups with a lower-body injury and was not able to play. Stolarz made 31 saves in the victory. Lehner stopped 18 of 22 shots in two periods. Christopher Gibson played the third period and made seven saves on eight shots.

T.J. Brennan had three assists in the win. 

The Flyers are back in action for the fourth straight night on Wednesday, this time facing the New York Rangers on the road. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
