Wheaton was expected to make the roster as the fifth wide receiver entering and through much of OTAs, but sustained an injury and missed most of the preseason games. Shelton Gibson and DeAndre Carter both played very impressive games during the time Wheaton was out and passed him on the depth chart. Wheaton is a veteran, so was not eligible for the practice squad. The Eagles brought the wideout back so they would have five dressed wide receivers Week One (Alshon Jeffery and Mack Hollins are out). Rodgers was expected to miss a few games, but will now miss at least six games to free up the spot on the roster. The league rules allow two players to return from the Injured Reserve list each season.
Joe Walker had made the 53-man, but was cut to make room for D.J. Alexander, a Pro Bowl special teamer and linebacker, who the Eagles claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. The Eagles like Walker and are happy that he cleared waivers so that they can keep him on the practice squad as additional depth. Asantay Brown was originally placed on the practice squad as a very under the radar player, but he would not provide an immediate replacement in case of injuries as Joe Walker does.
