Final: Mets 24, Phillies 4  ❖

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Phillies and Mets will close out the five-game weekend series in Williamsport in the Little League Classic. In Game 1 of a doubleheader on Thursday, the Phillies looked more like a Little League team than a potential playoff contender.

The Phillies committed four errors in the game as the Mets piled on runs in a rout, including a 10-run fifth inning, to beat the Phillies, 24-4, in Game 1 on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park.

WP: Corey Oswalt (2-2, 5.16 ERA) ❖ LP: Ranger Suarez (1-1, 8.00 ERA)

The Mets opened the scoring immediately as Amed Rosario hit the first pitch of the game out to centerfield for a solo home run.

The Phillies countered in the bottom of the second with a pair of solo home runs by Rhys Hoskins and Maikel Franco.

Rosario singled in the top of the third to plate a run. After an error by Franco prolonged the inning, Todd Frazier walked with the bases loaded to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Nick Williams answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to tie the game back up.

Another error by Franco plated two more runs in the fourth. Rosario reached on a one-out infield single, but Franco's wild throw trying to get Rosario allowed two runs to score, making it a 5-3 Mets lead.

Jorge Alfaro cut the lead to one with the Phillies fourth solo home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

It was a 5-4 game entering the fifth, and while it had been sloppy to that point by the Phillies, they were still very much alive in a one-run game. They were in for quite the inning in the top of the fifth.

A single and a double gave the Mets two runners in scoring position with no outs. A balk by Ranger Suarez plated one run. Jose Bautista singled to make it 7-4, ending the day for Suarez. Mark Leiter Jr. came on and got the first out of the inning, then walked Kevin Plawecki. Pitcher Corey Oswalt tried to get down a sacrifice bunt, but it was thrown away at second by Alfaro, allowing another run to score. Rosario hit a ground ball to short, but beat out the double play attempt, allowing another run to score.

Austin Jackson then hit a fly ball to left field that should have ended the inning, but was dropped by Hoskins, bringing in another run to make it 10-4. Wilmer Flores singled to score Jackson to make it 11-4. A double and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, and Bautista hit a grand slam to cap a 10-run inning. Of the 10 runs scored by the Mets, eight were unearned to the pitchers.

By the seventh, the Phillies were just looking to save arms, so Roman Quinn took to the mound. On his second pitch, he surrendered a home run to Michael Conforto to make it a 16-4 Mets lead. Plawecki added an RBI single in the inning to make it 17-4.

Quinn pitched the eighth as well and loaded the bases on two hits and a hit batter. He walked the next two batters to bring in two more runs. Plawecki then doubled to score two more runs. Quinn then shifted from pitching to shortstop as Scott Kingery came in to pitch. Kingery gave up an RBI single to relief pitcher Jerry Blevins on his first pitch to make it 22-4.

Kingery pitched the ninth and allowed two more runs on a single by Flores and a double by Bautista.
