Phillies Acquire INF Asdrubal Cabrera From Mets

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired 12-year veteran utility infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets in exchange for 10th-ranked prospect RHP Franklyn Kilome, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Cabrera, 32, is slashing .277/.329/.488 this season with 18 home runs and 58 RBI spanning 98 games and 407 plate appearances. The two-time All-Star and 2011 Silver Slugger Award winner is on the final year of his three-year, $24.75 million contract. The Phillies will cover all of the $2.9 million remaining salary Cabrera is owed for the rest of the season.

Kilome, 23, went 4-6 with a 4.24 ERA, 83-51 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.441 WHIP spanning 19 starts this season at Double-A Reading.

Reactions From Around the League:

  • Glen Macnow: "Seems like a terrific pick up for the Phillies. I guess the question is whether Cabrera can still play shortstop. If he can, it’s a brilliant move."
  • Brent Hershey: "Some thoughts on the Kilome/Asdrubal trade: Not surprised Phillies parted w Kilome, when it became apparent they were going to be buyers this seemed like the type of arm that would be sought by others."
  • Paul Boyé: "The Asdrubal trade comes 17 years to the day since the last time the Phillies and Mets traded with one another, when the Phils sent Bruce Chen and Adam Walker to the Mets for Dennis Cook and the infamous Turk Wendell."
  • Zach Braziller: "This Mets-Phillies deal seems good for both sides. Mets get a quality prospect and Phillies gets a nice bat for the stretch run. I can see Cabrera being very good in that ballpark."
  • Matt Ehalt: "Mets getting Franklyn Kilome from Phillies, which seems like a better haul than they got for Familia."
  • Jim Bowden: "Mets get power arm RHP Franklyn Kilome in Cabrera trade 6-6 200. Good arm no command or control as shown by his 51 walks in 102 IP….Profiles more as a reliever….good job by Phillies for not including a 2nd player. Cabrera .277/.329/.488 with 23 2B 18 HR 58 RBI OPS+124"
  • Bernie Pleskoff: "Phillies are sending a probable middle of the rotation starter to the #Mets in RHP Franklyn Kilome. He is at least-major league average with very good fastball and slider and mediocre other pitches at this point. Now at Double-A. He is a solid return with upside."
  • Todd Zolecki: "The Phillies' bench is going to become much deeper in the coming days and weeks. Scott Kingery back to super-utility role. Roman Quinn joined the team today. J.P. Crawford back soon."

As NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman notes, the switch-hitter's .488 slugging percentage would lead all Phillies batters except left fielder Rhys Hoskins (.509) and third baseman Maikel Franco (.490). Before acquiring Cabrera, the Phillies also reportedly showed interest in Freddy GalvisAdeiny Hechavarria, Jose IglesiasWhit Merrifield and the recently-dealt Eduardo Escobar.

Cabrera played eight seasons with the Cleveland Indians from 2007-2014, before being dealt to the Washington Nationals in July 2014 for LF/SS Zach Walters. Cabrera has since played for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015, and the Mets from 2016-2018. Cabrera and Phillies first baseman Carlos Santana were teammates in Cleveland from 2010-2014. Cabrera led the Mets this season in batting average (.277), slugging percentage (.488), home runs (18), RBI (58) and doubles (23).

The Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, native has a career .979 fielding percentage, with experience at shortstop, second base and third base. In 1,480 career games, Cabrera is slashing .270/.331/.425 with 333 doubles, 24 triples, 157 home runs, 688 RBI, 86 stolen bases, 465 walks and 1,069 strikeouts.
