After losing out on Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers and closer Zach Britton to the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly eyeing a third Baltimore Orioles All-Star-caliber player on the trade block, with less than a week remaining until the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
The Phillies are reportedly "considering" outfielder Adam Jones, a five-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove and 2013 Silver Slugger awards winner, according to Fancred's Jon Heyman.
Jones, 32, is in the final year of his six-year, $85.5 million contract. NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman calls the 13-year veteran a "strange fit," if acquired:
Jones hasn't played a position other than center field since 2007. That's not to say he couldn't fill in capably in right field or left field, he just hasn't done it. … The bigger issue is that Jones is the polar opposite type of offensive player the Phillies seek. He swings at everything. He never walks — he's averaged 24 walks per season since 2013. … In terms of a platoon situation, Jones has actually been significantly worse in his career against lefties (.265 BA, .726 OPS) than he has been vs. righties (.282 BA, .793 OPS).
In two seasons with the Seattle Mariners and 11 seasons with the Orioles, the San Diego, California, native is slashing .278/.317/.458 with 303 doubles, 28 triples, 261 home runs, 853 RBI, 89 stolen bases, 298 walks and 1,265 strikeouts.
