The Philadelphia Phillies bullpen was asked to work 11 innings in the club's 7-4, 16-inning marathon victory on Tuesday in relief of All-Star starter Aaron Nola.
Down 3-1 entering the sixth, southpaw Adam Morgan would enter in relief of the right-hander, and allow a solo home run to opposing catcher Yasmani Grandal, his second of the game. The Dodgers would not secure over the next 10 innings, with Phillies relievers — including Vince Velasquez in the 16th — allowing just six hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts.
Among the Phillies relievers who entered was rookie Austin Davis, who tossed scoreless 14th and 15th innings and stuck out three batters, the last of which was Grandal with two runners in scoring position and two outs.
Obscure (but fun?) stat: The #Phillies bullpen tossed 11 innings tonight and allowed one run or fewer for just the 11th time since at least 1913 (last: May 25, 2011 vs. Reds, 12 IP & 1 R)

After the five-hour and 55-minute game, which concluded early Wednesday morning, Davis labeled the Phillies bullpen to reporters as "nasty" and "disgusting."
"I mean, everyone from top to bottom is gross," Davis said. "I don't know what the narrative is out there, but our bullpen is disgusting."
Davis is not incorrect. For the month of July, the Phillies bullpen has combined for a Major League Baseball-best 2.54 ERA, and are tied for the second-best WAR, 1.1.
Velasquez made his first relief appearance as a Phillie, and earned the win, allowing just a single and walk with one strikeout spanning five faced batters and 20 pitches. It was the right-hander's first relief appearance since making 12 with the Houston Astros as a rookie in 2015.
The Phillies are Dodgers will play in the series finale rubber match Wednesday afternoon, less than 12 hours after the conclusion of the series' second game.
