The Philadelphia Phillies are moving on after not landing superstar shortstop Manny Machado in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.
Although the Phillies brass is said to be "very disappointed" to not have acquired Machado, per Fancred's Jon Heyman, the club reportedly remains "determined" to acquire a shortstop prior to the non-waiver trade deadline in 11 days.
Among the names Heyman lists that the Phillies are said to be "looking at" is Minnesota Twins 3B/SS Eduardo Escobar.
Escobar, 29, is an impending free agent who leads all of baseball in doubles this season, 35, with a .271/.327/.507 slash in 90 games. The Villa de Cura, Venezuela, native has committed just one error in 70 chances and 185 2/3 innings at short, and two errors in 165 chances and 585 2/3 innings at the hot corner. Given the Phillies have committed the fourth-most errors among all MLB teams, 70, Escobar's presence in the field surely would be an upgrade.
The Phillies reportedly had scouts at the Twins' July 9 home game against the Kansas City Royals on Monday, July 9, according to Darren Wolfson. Escobar and fellow Royals utility player Whit Merrifield were likely targeted the most among Phillies representatives. Escobar went 3-for-4 with a RBI that game, while Merrifield went 1-for-4.

Acquiring Escobar would move rookie Scott Kingery back into the super-utility role, while J.P. Crawford remains on the disabled list with a fractured left hand suffered on June 19. The switch-hitting Escobar would also get a look at the hot corner with Maikel Franco, barring Franco is not dealt, amid rumors suggesting the club is looking to "move on" from him.
Heyman also lists Jose Iglesias, "old friend" Freddy Galvis, Adeiny Hechavarria and Miguel Rojas as "other potentially available shortstops" the Phillies could target.
