Philadelphia Eagles Roster Cuts: A Running Thread of 2024 Philadelphia Eagles Roster Cuts
Like the rest of the National Football League, the Philadelphia Eagles have some decisions to make. The Birds must trim their roster from 90 player to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 PM EDT. Most cuts will be obvious but there’s interesting battles being waged especially in the defensive backfield.
Stay right here for the latest Eagles roster cuts as the Birds trim to their 53-man roster ahead of their September 6 opener in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers.

WR Parris Campbell
Campbell was almost a lock, but the Jahan Dotson trade shook up the receiver room and with a draft pick looking solid and Covey’s steps forward, it isn’t a huge surprise to see Campbell left out. His injury made him miss quite a bit of valuable time. If he isn’t signed elsewhere, I’d expect him back on the practice squad.

WR Ainias Smith (IR Placement)
Not technically a cut, but it’s essentially what the Eagles are doing here. Ainias Smith reported discomfort yesterday out of the blue and then Tuesday the Eagles announced they’d be placing him on IR.
Smith did not earn a roster spot, but as a draft pick the Eagles wanted to keep him around and this ensures he will stay with the team and could play this season if they wanted him to do so.
TE Albert Okwuegbunam
The Eagles re-signed him this year, but he still didn’t catch on. Even though they didn’t lose much, it’s probably a trade that Howie Roseman wants back after the TE really contributed nothing to the team all last season. Albert O. was also the only other TE that seemingly had a shot at a roster spot, so it seems they’ll go with two and it looks more and more likely they may re-signing Jack Stoll.

TE E.J. Jenkins
This is the biggest surprise so far. Jenkins had an excellent preseason and was the favorite for the third tight end spot by many. One has to wonder if the team may be looking at keeping only two tight ends (or perhaps re-signing Jack Stoll?).
Source: The #Eagles are waiving TE E.J. Jenkins.
Jenkins had a nice summer, emerging from a crowded field to position himself as the favorite for TE3.

WR John Ross
Ross had a pretty strong preseason after attempting a comeback at minicamp and landing himself a contract for the rest of the offseason. The Jahan Dotson trade seemingly made his inclusion on the roster near impossible just due to the numbers game.

A potential practice squad candidate. Ross isn’t subject to waivers. pic.twitter.com/mzqCVBUGnr

OL Anim Dankwah
Added as an UDFA this year, the cut isn’t a surprise but he may get a shot on the practice squad as Jeff Stoutland loves to work with the guys with size like Anim has.

RB Lew Nichols
The #Eagles are waiving RB Lew Nichols, source said.
Nichols, 23, spent much of last season on the Eagles’ practice squad and flashed at times this summer.

OL Jason Poe
The #Eagles are waiving OL Jason Poe, source said. Poe was brought back late in camp due to a numbers shortage on the offensive line.

OL Gottlieb Ayedze

DT PJ Mustipher
Mustipher showed some impressive plays toward the end of the preseason. He doesn’t have much in terms of pass rushing, but his leadership and drive are something that I thought might get the PSU product a spot on the back end of the roster. Instead, he’d seem like a good practice squad candidate now.

CB Zech McPhearson
A former fourth-round pick of the Birds, it was tough to see a way for McPhearson to make this roster after the draft. While there was hope he could develop into a solid corner, he never got the chance following a season-ending injury before last season even started. The extra depth was just too many people he had to try and overcome while returning from serious injury.
The #Eagles are waiving CB Zech McPhearson, per league source.

LB Brandon Smith
A player who started showing some good signs in the final preseason games, it certainly seemed like the Penn State product was on the outside looking in but had played himself toward that roster bubble that’d make him a potential practice squad signing if he couldn’t crack the roster right out of camp.

CB Shon Stephens
Source: #Eagles are waiving CB Shon Stephens.
One of the better stories of training camp, Stephens punched his ticket onto the Eagles’ 90-man roster following a successful rookie minicamp tryout.

QB Will Grier, DB Parry Nickerson, OLB Julian Okwara
Scharping is now offically official after being the first reported cut. Nickerson and Grier never got any traction so Okwara is probably the biggest addition to the list since he played the last four seasons with the Lions (actually saw the field) and was brought in back in February.

TE Kevin Foelsh
Foelsh was a local addition from a small local school (New Haven) later in camp. He did flash some ability in the preseason games, but it never really seemed like he had a shot at the 53-man that late in camp – it remains to be seen if he made enough of an impression to latch on with a practice squad.
The #Eagles are waiving TE Kevin Foelsch, I’m told.
The New Haven product was a late camp addition.

S Andre’ Sam
Sam was one of the bigger names in the Eagles’ undrafted free agent class this year. If the team hopes to get him on the practice squad, that probably means he’d have made the cut for some of the teams in the league not looking to compete now, but with such a deep secondary he had an uphill battle here in year one.
The #Eagles are waiving S Andre’ Sam, per source.
My understanding is the plan is to bring Sam back on the practice squad, provided he clears waivers.

DE Tarron Jackson
Probably the first name that more casual Eagles fans will recognize, Jackson was a draft pick of the Eagles and had been re-signed on a futures deal at the end of last season.

OL Max Scharping
The first reported release is OL Max Scharping, a former second-round pick who just didn’t seem to get any traction in Eagles camp after joining the team in early June.
