After 15 seasons, 2008 Philadelphia Phillies World Series champion Jayson Werth is calling an end to his career, according to Fancred Sports' Jon Heyman.
Werth, 39, dealt with a mild hamstring strain most of this season with the Seattle Mariners Triple-A affiliate, albeit collecting 11 singles, 11 doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI in 36 games and 145 plate appearances.
While not explicitly using the word "retirement" to Heyman in conversation Wednesday afternoon, Werth did tell the baseball scribe, “I’m done … whatever you want to call it.”
Heyman writes:
Werth's other special connection is former Phillies GM Pat Gillick, who originally drafted him as a catcher for the Orioles, then called after the Dodgers released him. Right after. … “It was 7 in the morning,” Werth recalled, as if it were yesterday. … That was the start of something great. But he always understood the end would come."
In four seasons with the Phillies from 2007-2010, Werth slashed .282/.380/.506 with 95 home runs, 300 RBI and 60 stolen bases spanning 68 attempts (.882). Werth appeared in 40 postseason games with the Phillies from 2007-2010. His 11 postseason home runs leads the Phillies franchise, while his 15 postseason blasts overall — also appearing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004 and the Washington Nationals in 2012, 2014, and 2016-2017 — ties with Babe Ruth for 11th all-time.

Werth left the Phillies after their 2009 World Series loss to the New York Yankees, signing a seven-year, $126 million deal with the Washington Nationals. There, Werth produced 109 home runs and 393 RBI in 808 games, slashing .263/.355/.433.
Only four players from the Phillies' 2008 championship team remain active in MLB: Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, Chase Utley and J.A. Happ.
