Arrieta, Severino square off as Phillies look to force rubber match

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Facing the MLB-best New York Yankees (51-25) for the first time in home regular-season action since June 19-21, 2006, the Philadelphia Phillies (41-35) and Jake Arrieta will oppose Luis Severino in the second of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies fell to the Yankees in Monday's series opener, 4-2, after their offense mustered just two singles and Maikel Franco's solo, ninth-inning home run against closer Aroldis Chapman the southpaw's first surrendered home run this season through 35 appearances. Scott Kingery and Jorge Alfaro collected the two singles, with Kingery's being a RBI base-knock that, at the time, cut the Phillies' 2-0, seventh-inning deficit in half. The Yankees' Aaron Judge hit a laser home run to left, his 20th, while Giancarlo Stanton drove in two in his first game at Citizens Bank Park since leaving the Miami Marlins this past offseason.

Yankees starter Jonathan Loaisiga allowed just one hit and two walks — while striking out eight batters — through 5 1/3 shutout innings. Vince Velasquez dropped to 5-8, despite allowing just two runs on three hits and four walks through six frames. In his return from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Hector Neris threw a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts.

The Phillies have won three straight regular-season series against the Yankees since May 2009. A loss either on Tuesday or in Wednesday's finale would be the club's first overall series loss against the Yankees since the 2009 World Series.
