Andrew Painter Named Arizona Fall League Pitcher of the Year
The comeback is always greater than the setback.
It certainly seems that way for Philadelphia Phillies top prospect Andrew Painter. The 21-year-old used the 2024 Arizona Fall League season to show the baseball world he was progressing well from Tommy John surgery.
“Well,” might be an understatement. It’s possible to state that Painter is “back” after missing two-years of competitive baseball.
Andrew Painter just threw a 5-pitch first inning, including a strikeout.

In what was originally designed as a more competitive rehab situation, Painter was electric during the AFL season. The righty went 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in six starts for the Glendale Desert Dogs. In his 15-⅔ innings of work, Painter held opponents to a .189 batting average against and struck out 18 against four walks. Painter showed great command of his pitches, worked efficiently, and most importantly showed he was healthy.
The impressive AFL season was enough to garner Painter 2024 AFL Pitcher of the Year and All-AFL honors. It also places him firmly in the discussion for the fifth spot in the rotation when Spring Training begins in February.
