With Opening Day just two days away, it appears newly-extended and promoted Philadelphia Phillies No. 2 prospect Scott Kingery has been assigned a new jersey number to start the 2018 regular season. Start ordering your jerseys.
As The Athletic's Ben Harris points out, Kingery substituted the "a" in his Twitter handle with the numeral "4" — @ScottyJetp4x. Sports Talk Philly and 97.3 ESPN Phillies reporter Frank Klose previously reported that Kingery could either be assigned No. 4 or No. 9. It appears Kingery and the Phillies elected to go with No. 4.
No. 4 was previously donned by utility player Andres Blanco from 2014-2017, John McDonald in 2013, Pete Orr in 2012, Dane Sardinha in 2010-2011 and Eric Bruntlett in 2008-2009. Like Blanco, McDonald, Orr and Bruntlett, Kingery will serve in the utility role for 2018, with his ability to play essentially anywhere in the field except either of the two battery combination positions, pitcher and catcher.
Kingery, 23, has ties to the number as far back as when he played Little League with his twin brother, Sam, at the 2006 Little League World Series. Sam wore No. 4, while Scott wore No. 2, the current number of Phillies shortstop J.P. Crawford. Scott will honor Sam and his Little League number starting on Thursday, Opening Day at SunTrust Park in Atlanta.
Kingery is hitting .418 this spring with seven runs scored, five home runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases spanning 55 at-bats.
