Milton Williams, 2023

Winning isn’t everything and the NFL is a business.

Presumably, that’s what’d have standout DT Milton Williams headed to Carolina, who just had another poor season.

At 5-12, the Panthers are already propped up by what is easily the weakest division in the NFL for the past three seasons. They might be able to win in a terrible division and get a playoff birth, but they really haven’t seemed to get any tractions to the point that real contenders are worried about them.

For Williams, though, this is his first free agent contract and initial reports have him potentially making $20 million AAV on the deal in Carolina making it an attractive bag.

Williams has certainly improved year over year, but it will be interesting to see how he fares on a Carolina line that features no other players as talented as Jalen Carter (though they do have Brown as a good pass rusher up the middle).

The Eagles will need Ojomo to step up with Williams’ departure, but they could also look to bring an inexpensive vet in or try to bring in someone like Jonathan Allen, who wouldn’t count against the comp pick formula. Additionally, DT is supposed to be pretty stacked in the upcoming draft.

The free agency period would need to finish to better calculate it, but a $20 million AAV certainly seems poised for the Eagles to land a third-round pick.

The deal cannot be finalized until Wednesday, so there’s always a chance things could change. This seems particularly possible with Williams, who reportedly still has the Cardinals and Vikings bidding for his services.

UPDATE: Williams is reportedly now getting an even bigger deal from the Patriots.
