Eagles Trade: Birds Sending CJGJ To Houston For Kenyon Green

The Eagles defense will be losing another member from the 2024 lineup.
In a surprising move, the Eagles agreed to send Chauncy Gardner-Johnson to Houston for Kenyon Green and an upgrade of draft capital.
It’s sure to be a shock for many fans since CJGJ was one of the players expected back by most.
In terms of draft capital, the Eagles send away a 2026 sixth-rounder and get back a 2026 fifth-rounder, so they move up a round in next year’s draft.
Cap-wise, the Eagles move Gardner-Johnson’s roughly $25 million of cap hits over the next three seasons off the books for a guard who carries just a $5 million hit this year.
Kenyon Green was a first-round pick in 2022 and started his rookie year, but was injured in 2023 and had a rough time coming back in 2024. With Mekhi Becton a free agent, Tyler Steen would seem to be the presumptive starter at guard right now but Green would probably compete with that.
The 6’4″, 325lb lineman fits the size the Eagles like to have up front and Jeff Stoutland will get to work with him.
As a first-round pick, Green has a fifth-round option the team could pick up to maintain control for two years.
CJGJ was often credited by fans with setting a tone on the back end. The Eagles are now left with Reed Blankenship and Tristin McCollum (on the last year of their contracts), Sydney Brown (who’s spent much of his career injured), UDFA Andre’ Sam, and former first-round pick Lewis Cine at the safety position.
