NFL Free Agency: Mekhi Becton Cashing In With Chargers

Many fans will be upset, but the writing was on the wall when no deal got done midseason.
Mekhi Becton is taking his revived career elsewhere and joining the Chargers.
OL Mekhi Becton has agreed to a two-year deal with the Chargers, sources tell ESPN.
Becton plans on playing guard, as he did this past season in Philadelphia.

Details aren’t available at the time of the signing beyond the deal being for two years.
It’s a near certainty the deal will earn the Eagles their fourth compensatory pick (the max any team can earn from losing free agents).
Becton joined the Eagles as a later free agent signing who didn’t garner much league interest.
Ultimately, he won the spot at starting right guard and bought into the Eagles culture on the way to a Super Bowl Championship.
It earned him a new lease on his career and put him in a position to make a big chunk of money that it just didn’t make sense for the Eagles to pay.
The Birds now have Kenyon Green who’s career is in a similar spot to the one Becton was in last year and Tyler Steen, who impressed in relief of Becton, also available to compete for that starting spot. Steen was the favorite last year and figures to be this year, too.
This is a case where the one-year deal worked out beautifully for both parties.
The Eagles will certainly keep tabs on Becton and all reports indicate Becton would have liked to return, but the Birds have to prioritize paying their own guys and that includes the likely extension this offseason of center Cam Jurgens.
Becton will plan to play guard for the Chargers as he did for the Eagles.
Update: The deal with the Chargers is worth $20 million and carries a $10 million AAV.
The #Chargers and Mekhi Becton agreed to terms on a 2-year, $20M deal, per me and @MikeGarafolo. https://t.co/2tV53hFe4m

That puts the Eagles in line for about a fifth-round pick.
