Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher Tyler Glasnow Pitches a Fit Over the Citizen Bank Park Mound

This isn’t an indictment on the Citizens Bank Park grounds crew. But Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow isn’t a fan of your work!
The Dodgers’ highly acclaimed starter entered Sunday’s game with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA after throwing five innings of two hit baseball in his season debut against the Atlanta Braves on March 31. LA fans expected more out of the prized right-hander on Sunday in Philadelphia but Mother Nature, subpar umpiring, and a lack of focus had other ideas.
As an overcast April Sunday turned into a steady mist, the 31-year-old began to come unglued on the mound at Citizens Bank Park for everyone to see. With the Dodgers clinging to a 2-0 lead, Glasnow began the third inning futzing with his cleats and hands. Clearly, the light but steady mist was getting to the Dodgers pitcher. What happened next is one of the wildest innings the game of baseball has seen in some time.
Unable to actually focus on pitching, Glasnow walked leadoff hitter Rafael Marchan on five pitches and his constant gesturing and futzing brought Dodgers’ pitching coach Mark Prior and team trainers from the dugout. It became apparent that Glasnow wasn’t injured but was unable to concentrate on making pitches. He would go on to walk the next two batters, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner, before Bryce Harper dropped a bloop RBI single. It would continue to get worse for Glasnow, he immediately uncorked a wild pitch which tied the ball game and then walked Max Kepler to reload the bases.

Oh, it got much worse for the Dodgers co-ace, or at least much worse for his stats.
Alex Vesia relieved Glasnow and proceeded to give up a first pitch grand slam to Nick Castellanos.

Glasnow’s final line: 2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2K.
Speaking to the media after the game, Glasnow touched on his outing and why it went so poorly:
“Once I had a couple of poorly gripped balls, I think I lost my aggression and rhythm. [Wished I] could have just adjusted the thought a little bit more about the mound and the conditions and just tried to get out of my head.
I think I just lost the feel and then that kind of compounded into a bad inning. I was just thinking about other stuff.
There’s not really an excuse; I just have to go out and find a way to execute next time.”

Thinking about other things? Like what, where to get a good cheesesteak?
It was noted — especially on social media — that Glasnow doesn’t have much experience pitching in adverse weather conditions over the past eight or so years. After starting is career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Glasnow has had luxury of pitching indoors at Tropicana Field as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays and in the California sunshine at Chavez Ravine. For his part, Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts downplayed the conditions saying, “the weather, it’s a factor, but every pitcher that took the mound today had to deal with it.”
As for Glasnow, he just gave Phillies fans all the ammo they need if/when the Dodgers make a return trip to South Philadelphia in Red October.
Note: the answer for the cheesesteak is ALWAYS Angelo’s if they’re open. If you’re on the Jersey side of the river, it’s Cockadoodle Dan’s in Moorestown.
