“Pooh,” as the Newark (NJ) West Side product is nicknamed, started 13 of 14 games last season for the Slippery Rock including 36 total tackles, three interceptions, four pass breakups, and seven passes defended. Lawton was a pivotal part of the Rock’s defense that went 12-2 and made it to the NCAA Division II National Championship game before falling to Ferris State.

Despite being selected to participate in the 2021 Phil Simms New Jersey North-South All-Star Football Classic at Kean University, Lawton received little attention from FBS programs out of high school. He selected Slippery Rock over offers from Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, and Stetson. While at the Western Pennsylvania school, Lawton added considerable size to his frame going from 160-pounds as a true freshman to 190-pounds as a transfer.
He will add a veteran presence to a Temple Owls safety room that is light on scholarship players.
