CLEARWATER, Fla. — Still in search of a veteran starting pitcher, the Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly issued one of "multiple offers on the table" to sign veteran free agent RHP Chris Tillman, according to Dan Clark of TBLDaily.com.
The Minnesota Twins have also placed an offer for the 2013 American League All-Star, per Clark. The only team Tillman has known thus far through his nine-year career, the Baltimore Orioles, have shown "no interest" to re-sign thus far.
Tillman, 29, went 73-55 with a 4.43 ERA as an Oriole from 2009 to 2017. Last season was perhaps the right-hander's worst, going 1-7 with a career-low 7.84 ERA spanning 19 starts and five relief appearances. Tillman appeared in at least 30 starts in each of the four seasons prior.
If the Phillies were to sign Tillman, it would likely only be on a one-year pact. In November, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported that Tillman is only looking for a one-year deal in free agency, so he could rebound in 2018 and "re-establish his value" for a larger deal next winter.
The Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays are among other teams that have also shown interest in Tillman this offseason.
On Thursday, the Phillies signed former Blue Jays veteran RHP Drew Hutchison to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training, and were among many clubs that attended the showcase of former San Francisco Giants Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum on Thursday. They have also shown interest in Chicago Cubs left-hander Mike Montgomery to slide into a starting role, as well as free agent southpaw Tony Watson for relief help.
Clearly, the search is still on for a veteran starter to complement the Phillies' young pitching staff.
