While Philadelphia Phillies general manager Mat Klentak unveiled his managerial selection – Gabe Kapler – this afternoon, news broke about where his predecessor will work in 2018.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, former Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. will join Mickey Callaway's staff with the New York Mets:
Ruben Amaro Jr. will be #Mets’ first base/baserunning/outfield coach, sources tell The Athletic. Had similar role with #RedSox last season.

Callaway, who interviewed for the Phillies managerial vacancy, has reportedly filled out much of the rest of his staff. According to Mike Puma of The New York Post, Pat Roessler will be the team's hitting coach, while Dave Eiland will be the pitching coach. Adding Amaro to the staff will give the Mets a good mix of experience and younger minds on their coaching staff.
Amaro had spent the previous two seasons on John Farrell's coaching staff with the Boston Red Sox.
It's hardly a surprise that the Red Sox appear to be bringing in an entire new coaching staff. Despite winning the American League East, the Red Sox were quickly eliminated from the playoffs by the eventual World Series champion Houston Astros. Farrell was fired almost immediately after the team was eliminated, and didn't seem to leave on good terms with Dombrowski. Former Houston Astros bench coach Alex Cora will be the team's new manager, and will bring a new staff in with him.
Amaro, who served as the Phillies general manager from 2009 until Sept. 10, 2015, was reportedly on the Detroit Tigers initial list of managerial candidates. Not much seemed to come of that, though, as the team ultimately hired Ron Gardenhire to fill the vacancy.
