Earlier today Sixers head coach Brett Brown revealed that Jahlil Okafor is no longer in the Sixers rotation at center.
Now Chris Haynes of ESPN is reporting that Okafor is on the trade block, as he has been for much of the last year. Haynes mentions that the desire for a trade is mutual from both sides.
At this time there is no leading candidate to land Okafor. Last season his name was connected to the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, and his hometown Chicago Bulls, but terms could not be met with any of those teams prior to last season's trade deadline despite reports that an Okafor trade was imminent.
Okafor has only appeared in one of the Sixers' five games this season – the only one that Joel Embiid did not play in against the Toronto Raptors. Okafor scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 22 minutes.
Earlier this month Okafor was the subject of a candid interview published by SB Nation. One Okafor response from that article seems especially relevant now: “Sometimes I do think it would be great to get a fresh start, be on a new team, new surroundings, new teammates. I think about that often and I think that's something that could benefit me.”
Okafor has been nothing short of professional in a time when the Sixers front office has handled his situation very poorly.
Haynes added that it is likely that the Sixers pick up Okafor's fourth-year option, and that it is expected to be a factor in any potential trade.
