With the Philadelphia Phillies at home for the sixth consecutive postseason, we've decided to take a look back what was was going on in the world the last time that the Phillies played in the World Series. The first installment of this series is a look back at what songs were popular when the Phillies fell to the Yankees in the 2009 World Series.
When the series began on Wednesday October 28, 2009, "3" by Britney Spears, which isn't an especially memorable song for anyone that's not a female Millennial, was the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100:
The song's chorus starts with Spears counting "1-2-3," making it a fitting song to have been No. 1 when Cliff Lee took the ball for the Phillies in Game 1, because he set the Yankees down in order quite a few times in his complete game. Of course, Spears wasn't referring to baseball when she said "1-2-3."
The series concluded on November 4, 2009, by which time the song "Down," which was Jay Sean's breakout hit and featured the uber-popular Lil' Wayne, had taken over the No. 1 spot for the second time in three weeks:
Lil' Wayne, who everyone had an opinion on at the time, finished his verse out by saying he was "down like the economy."As one YouTube commenter put it, that was a little too good of an analogy, as the United States was just a few months removed from when the National Bureau of Economic Research says the Great Recession ended.
Other songs near the top of the charts during the World Series were "Whatcha Say" by Jason Derulo, "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon, "Fireflies" by Owl City and "Run This Town," which was Jay-Z featuring Kanye West and Rihanna.
The Black Eyed Peas owned the charts for much of the 2009 season. One of their two singles, "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling," came in at the No. 1 spot for 26 consecutive weeks, ending on October 10 when "Down" became the No. 1 song on the charts the first time.
Philadelphia, of course, never is lacking in creative minds. So, "I Gotta Feeling" inspired Elvis Duran and the Q102 morning show to create what, in hindsight, was a fairly cringe-worthy remix of the song with a Phillies twist:
Earlier that year, American classic "Party In The U.S.A." was released by Hannah Montana Miley Cyrus. The song, rather inexplicably, was released on July 29, a few weeks after Fourth of July. Q102 teamed up with B. Lee and Jaime Curry for a much better remix to this song, which they memorably called "Phillies Going All The Way:"
