The Phillies have not really had a chance to play their full, new outfield after the trade of Howie Kendrick to the Washington Nationals. With Nick Williams firmly implanted in a starting outfield role, first regulars Aaron Altherr then center fielder Odubel Herrera both landed on the disabled list. Today, the Phillies announced that both outfielders have been activated and are re-joining the Phillies in New York.
The injuries helped lead to a Rhys Hoskins promotion, as a starting spot in the outfield gave him a spot in the lineup. Hoskins could still see some time in left field provided his sore hand is ready for action, as Altherr was not yet strong enough to play in a game, though he rehabbed with both the Double-A Reading Fightin' Phils and Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs this week. Herrera played in a game at each level and should be ready to resume center field. When at full strength, Hoskins will see time at first base over Tommy Joseph.
The move also likely means less playing time for the likes of Cameron Perkins, Hyun Soo Kim, and Daniel Nava. Nava has been hobbled by a sore hamstring himself. Pedro Florimon, who got some time in the outfield as of late, twisted his ankle while landing on first base and is unable to play. The Phillies have also used Freddy Galvis in the outfield and could do so again in the final weeks of the season.
Whether Galvis plays could depend upon the status of shortstop J.P. Crawford. The Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs played themselves back into playoff contention. If they win their final game on Monday, they will earn a playoff spot. That could delay Crawford's arrival to the Phillies.
The Phillies active roster now stands at 29.
