PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies (42-70) came into tonight's game hoping to continue the momentum that they had built at the end of their most recent road trip. The New York Mets (51-61) had other plans. Phils starter Vince Velasquez only pitched one inning, leaving the game with numbness in his right middle finger. It was obvious that something was wrong, as he threw 32 pitches and allowed three runs in the first. Mark Leiter Jr. entered the game in relief of Velasquez and threw five solid innings, only allowing one run and striking out seven. While Ricardo Pinto was successful in his inning of relief, Jesen Therrien and Luis Garcia were not. They combined for six runs on six hits over two innings. To put it simply, the Phillies pitchers struggled mightily with command, as they let up four home-runs.
The excitement surrounding tonight's game was a result of the promotion of Phillies prospect Rhys Hoskins. In his Major League debut, he went 0-2 with a walk. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only Phillie who struggled against Mets starter Jacob deGrom. The Mets' righty was extremely dominant, only allowing four hits and striking out nine. Odubel Herrera got one of those four hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, tying a personal record. Cesar Hernandez's hitting streak came to an end.

The Mets came out swinging. With two outs in the top of the first, Yoesnis Cespedes doubled to right field. Michael Conforto walked to bring Wilmer Flores to the plate. He followed with a three-run homer into the ivy in center field. Jose Reyes doubled, and it appeared that something wasn't right with Phillies starter Vince Velasquez. Manager Pete Mackanin was spotted near the dugout stairs with the trainer. Velasquez was able to retire Travis d'Arnaud for the final out of the frame.
The Mets added to their lead in the third against Phillies reliever Mark Leiter Jr, who had entered the game in the previous inning. Neil Walker led off the frame with a homer to right-center field to give the Mets a 4-0 lead. After back-to-back strike-outs by Cespedes and Conforto, Flores doubled. Reyes struck out for the third out.
The Mets took a break from scoring until the seventh. With one out, Curtis Granderson singled to left. Walker followed with a single of his own to put two runners on for Cespedes. He struck out for the second out of the inning and it seemed like Phils reliever Jesen Therrien would get out of the inning unscathed. Conforto had other plans. He homered to right field to extend the Mets' lead. Flores grounded out to end the inning.
The scoring continued for the Mets in the ninth inning. Pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo led off the inning with a walk. Granderson followed with a homer to center field to give the Mets a 9-0 lead. Walker and Cespedes hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second for Conforto. He walked to load the bases with no outs. Flores struck out for the first out of the inning. Reyes grounded into a force out, with Conforto being retired at second. This allowed Walker to score and give the Mets double digits in runs. d'Arnaud lined out for the final out, but the Mets had more than enough runs to secure the win.
