Phillies’ five game winning streak ends with loss to Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Coming into tonight's game, the Philadelphia Phillies (39-65) were hoping to extend their winning streak to six games. However, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (52-55) had other plans. Phillies starter Aaron Nola had a solid outing, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings. He didn't have his best stuff, but the only real blemish on his line was a two-run double off the bat of Albert Pujols. The Phils' relief pitchers put the game out of reach. Mark Leiter Jr. and Drew Anderson both struggled, with the latter making his Major League debut in the eighth inning.

The Phillies bats didn't take advantage of the opportunities they were handed. They did get eight hits, but failed to get any hits in the clutch. The team left nine runners on base and went 2-16 with runners in scoring position. The team needs consistent offensive production to support the starting pitchers, who have been good as of late.

The Phillies took an early lead in tonight's game. Cesar Hernandez led off the game with an infield single. After a fly out by Freddy Galvis, right fielder Aaron Altherr came to the plate. Hernandez moved up to second base on a wild pitch by Angels' starter Ricky Nolasco. Altherr reached base on an error by Nolasco to put runners on first and third for Tommy Joseph. He singled to left field to score Hernandez and give the Phils a 1-0 lead. Odubel Herrera and Maikel Franco were retired on a pop out and a strike out, respectively, to end the inning.

The Angels fought back in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Yunel Escobar hit his second single of the day. Mike Trout followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Albert Pujols. He doubled to right field to score both Escobar and Trout, and give the Angels the lead. Phils starter Aaron Nola was able to retire Luis Valbuena for the final out of the inning to keep the game close.

The Angels extended their lead in the seventh. Kaleb Cowart led off the inning with a single. After a strike-out by Escobar, Trout singled to left field. Pujols followed with his 17th homer of the season to left field. With the homer, Pujols' RBI total for the day was up to five. Valbuena was hit with a pitch. He was retired at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Andrelton Simmons. Left fielder Ben Revere grounded out to end the inning.

The Angels weren't done hitting just yet. They faced Phillies reliever Drew Anderson in his Major League debut in the eighth and didn't make it a pleasant memory for him. With one out, Cliff Pennington singled to center. Cowart followed with a single to put runners on first and second. During the at bat of Shane Robinson, Pennington and Cowart completed a double steal. Phils catcher Andrew Knapp threw the ball past third base, allowing Pennington to score and Cowart to advance to third. Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to score Cowart and give the Angels a 7-1 lead. Trout struck out for the final out, but the Angels had more than enough runs to secure the win.
