Phillies’ 7-run comeback not enough in loss to Brewers

Final: Brewers 9, Phillies 8  ❖  Attendance: 17,712

PHILADELPHIA — Despite completing a seven-run comeback, the Philadelphia Phillies (33-62) failed to secure their eighth series victory of the season in the second of the three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers (53-47) Saturday evening at Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies starter RHP Jeremy Hellickson allowed six runs on seven hits, two walks and six strikeouts through five innings. Brewers' starter LHP Brent Suter, meanwhile, allowed just one run through six innings on five hits, five strikeouts and 85 pitches (63 strikes).

The Phillies were 3-7 with runners in scoring position (six left on base), while the Brewers went 4-10 (seven left on base). Center fielder Odubel Herrera doubled twice, setting a personal career high for doubles in a season, 31. With his 4-4 performance, Herrera's season batting average has climbed to .270, a 53-point improvement from his May 30 average of .217.

With the loss, the Phillies' three-game win streak was snapped, while the Brewers erased their six-game losing skid. Both clubs logged 13 hits and two errors.

WP: Jacob Barnes (3-1, 3.92 ERA)  ❖  LP: Hector Neris (2-4, 3.35 ERA)  ❖  SV: Corey Knebel (17)

Game Summary

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
MIL 0 0 4 0 2 0 2 0 1 9 13 2
PHI 0 0 0 0 1 0 4 3 0 8 13 2

The Phillies trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning in large part thanks to left fielder Ryan Braun, who supplied four RBIs with a two-RBI double in the third and two-run home run in the fifth.

A solo home run by Herrera to lead off the bottom of the fifth put the Phillies on the board, but the club would go on to allow two more runs in the seventh via a throwing and fielding error on the same play, followed by a solo home run by third baseman Travis Shaw.

Down 8-1 heading into the seventh inning stretch, a sixth loss of the season for Hellickson seemed all but inevitable. That would turn out to not be the case. A one-out double by pinch hitter Cameron Perkins, followed by a three-run home run by second baseman Cesar Hernandez, cut the Phillies' deficit to three runs, 8-5.

One inning later, catcher Cameron Rupp hit a three-run blast to right, tying the game at eight.

Right-hander Hector Neris failed at preserving the tie game in the ninth, as former Phillies prospect RF Domingo Santana hit a RBI single to left to give Milwaukee the 9-8 lead. The Phillies went down in order in the ninth against closer Corey Knebel, failing to capitalize on their comeback effort.
