Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that the Sixers are shopping their second round selections.
Pompey said one executive told him that "They're trying to sell one of the second-rounders." Another executive revealed that "their last two second-rounders are in play [for possible trades]. The word is out there."
The Sixers have five selections in the June 22 draft, four of which are in the second round. By getting rid of some of the second round picks the Sixers will have more roster flexibility to add higher quality players.
The phrasing from the first executive suggests that the Sixers are willing to receive cash considerations or eat a players salary to lose the pick.
An alternative to giving up the pick(s) for virtually nothing is to select an international prospect so that he will not take a roster spot while continuing his development overseas. Rookie of the Year candidate Dario Saric spent two years overseas before coming to the NBA last season and 2016 first round pick Furkan Korkmaz spent last season overseas as he know looks to come to the NBA, where there appears to be mutual interest.
The Sixers could also attempt to package one of their players that they are not attached to with one or two of the second round selections for another player or to move back into the first round.
Even with the NBA roster size expanding from 15 players to 17 players next season, the Sixers will still need to find a way to trim the roster by limiting their draft selections.
The Sixers hold the third, 36th, 39th, 46th, and 50th overall selections in the draft.
