While people already knew that Ben Simmons was going to be the Sixers' point guard for the 2017-18 season, it was unsure whether or not Simmons would be considered a "1" on defense as well as manning the point on offense.

Head Coach Brett Brown was adamant on Simmons being his team's point guard, but now Sixers President Bryan Colangelo has stated that he thinks Simmons can "guard most point guards in this league."

While this doesn't determine whether or not Ben Simmons will in fact go one-on-one with NBA-sized point guards next season, it does show that Colangelo is not opposed to such an idea.

Whether the Sixers go forward with this idea or not is up to who the team takes with their impending lottery draft pick at this year's NBA Draft.

However, the endorsement from Colangelo to Simmons is a pretty high remark.

Simmons playing the point guard position from both an offensive and defensive standpoint would cause quite a stir among the defenders that come his way. Simmons stands in close to 7-feet tall, and if he goes one-on-one with a 5'8" Isaiah Thomas, for example, that could cause confusion on the other end, allowing Simmons to take advantage of it.

At an end of season press conference just close to a month ago, Bryan Colangelo compared Simmons to Magic Johnson, saying that Simmons with the point guard position is "not dissimilar to what Magic (Johnson) brought to the point guard spot."

While the comparison is definitely not completely apples for apples, there are plenty of similarities given that Simmons is 7-foot tall and Magic comes in around 6'9", and that both players are extremely athletic.

It will be interesting to see if the Sixers decide to go this route for the next season and beyond.
