Phillies Strike Early, Roll Past Cubs

Final: Phillies 10, Cubs 2 ❖  Attendance: 38,567

CHICAGO, Il. — The Phillies road trip got off on the wrong foot in Los Angeles with the Dodgers sweeping a three-game series. Perfect time to visit the defending World Champions, right?

That didn't seem to bother the Phillies, who jumped out to an early lead after a rain delay and never looked back, scoring seven runs in the first two innings of a 10-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night at Wrigley Field.

WP: Vince Velasquez (2-2, 5.47 ERA)  ❖  LP: Brett Anderson (2-1, 6.23 ERA)  ❖

Game Summary

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
PHI 4 3 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 10 12 1
CHI 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 2 4 0

The game started about an hour and a half later after a rain delay, but once it did, the Phillies got rolling early. Two batters into the game, Aaron Altherr hit an RBI double to score Cesar Hernandez to put the Phillies on the board first. Tommy Joseph added a three-run home run to left to cap a four-run first inning for the Phillies.

Altherr added another RBI double, this time plating two runs, to extend the lead in the second. Odubel Herrera added an RBI single to cap a three-run inning.

All seven runs came off starter Brett Anderson, who lasted just 1 1/3 innings. Mike Montgomery helped the Cubs settle in, allowing two hits and two walks in 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Cubs threatened to score in the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Vince Velasquez escaped. Velasquez did allow a solo home run to Javier Baez to lead off the fifth, but that was the only run allowed in five innings.

The Phillies got three more runs in the seventh via the long ball again. First, Michael Saunders hit a solo home run to right-center for his second of the season. Freddy Galvis followed two batters later with a two-run shot to right-center, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

The Cubs got a run back in their half of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
