Adam Morgan is heading to Lehigh Valley (Brandon Apter/Sports Talk Philly)
After Phillies starter Clay Buchholz exited the game in the third inning of the Phillies 14-4 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday, they turned to their long man, Adam Morgan. Morgan provided the team little relief, going three and two-thirds innings while allowing four earned runs. The news got Morgan a demotion.
The Phillies optioned Morgan to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies have said that a corresponding move would be made tomorrow.
Luis Garcia has been serving as the IronPigs closer in the early going. The IronPigs shut out the Scranton-Wilkes Barre RailRiders on Tuesday night 6-0, so Garcia did not pitch. A member of the 40-man roster, the Phillies could easily switch out Garcia for Morgan.
Morgan may end up having to start at Lehigh Valley. With the injury to Buchholz, the Phillies may have to dip into their Triple-A depth for another starter. Zach Eflin, recently activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A, and Jake Thompson would be the top two candidates to head to Philadelphia to start.
