With the Flyers' amount of games remaining lingering in the single digits, they headed to Pittsburgh to close out not just their season series with the Penguins, but a topsy-turvy four-game road trip.
A tale of two different teams, basically. One team headed back to the playoffs, while the other quickly heads for an early offseason.
The Flyers, however, looked like the former on Sunday, in a 6-2 rout against their cross-state rivals. Despite falling behind early, the Flyers had no problem recovering quick and playing far ahead of the Pens.
Jordan Weal put the Flyers on the board with 54.4 seconds left in the first period, erasing the lead that Matt Cullen gave the Penguins within the first five minutes. From there, Valtteri Filppula put the Flyers on top in the second, on a goal that stood seconds later after a Penguins challenge.
Dale Weise gave the Orange and Black a two-goal lead early in the third, while Jakub Voracek cashed in on a Claude Giroux rebound seven-and-a-half minutes later. From there, the Flyers were on pace to dominate the Penguins like they did on that March 15 4-0 win.
Patric Hornqvist buried a sharp goal with 6:24 left that appeared as though it would give the Pens some momentum, but that was squashed with 2:29 to go when Radko Gudas mailed home an empty-netter from the neutral zone. Shayne Gostisbehere tallied on a rocket with just over a minute to play, and that just about sealed the deal.
Steve Mason turned in a strong effort for the Orange and Black, making 25 saves on 27 shots. Matt Murray countered with 27 saves on 32 shots.
Profiled on NBC's coverage as part of its weekly "Star Sunday" series, Wayne Simmonds finished with two shots, a plus-1 rating and four hits in 17:13 of ice time. Sidney Crosby, also profiled, won nine of 20 faceoffs, let go of four shots in 21:41 of ice time, posted a minus-2 rating and was held off the scoresheet for the second-consecutive game against the Flyers.
With the win, the Flyers close out their season series with the Penguins at 2-2. It almost seems criminal that fans get four Flyers-Penguins games in a season, though.
The Flyers return home Tuesday, taking on the Ottawa Senators.
