They started off strong, but in the end, had to hold off another furious rally. The Phantoms returned the favor on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night in the second half of a home-and-home, defeating the Penguins, 3-2, at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The win moves the Phantoms back to within three points of first place in the Atlantic Division. They still have a game in hand on the Penguins.
The Phantoms opened the scoring in the first when an unlikely source for scoring got things going. Tyrell Goulbourne, who returned to the Phantoms lineup on Saturday, scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-0 at 6:01.
The Phantoms had a two-man advantage in the first that they failed to capitalize on, taking the one-goal lead to the intermission.
In the second, the Phantoms padded their lead with two quick goals. First, Reece Willcox managed to get a shot on goal while Tristan Jarry was out of position, scoring third of the season to make it 2-0.
Just 15 seconds later, Danick Martel cashed in for his 19th goal of the season to extend the lead to three.
The Phantoms closed out the period with the three-goal lead despite a late push from the Penguins.
In the third, the Penguins started their rally early, with Tom Kostopoulos scoring to make it a 3-1 game at 4:49.
The Phantoms again had a chance to put the game away with another 5-on-3 power play and another power play with under six minutes to play. The Phantoms failed to score again.
That set the stage for a furious fight to the finish. The Penguins scored while shorthanded with 4:57 to play to cut the lead to one, as Oskar Sundqvist picked up his 17th goal of the season.
As the Penguins kept up their rally, the Phantoms took a penalty with 1:40 to play with Scott Laughton going off for slashing. The Penguins pressed for the remainder of the game at 6-on-4, but the Phantoms survived the flurry to get the win.
The Penguins took just eight shots in the third after a 21-shot second period, but Anthony Stolarz was solid in goal, making 37 saves on 39 shots.
The Phantoms head back on the road this week for back-to-back games in St. John's on Tuesday and Wednesday against the IceCaps.
