March 11, 1986
Over their 50-year history, it has been a rare occurrence to have the Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey Devils get together on a trade. On this day 31 years ago, they did just that as the Orange and Black picked up a veteran backup goaltender.
The Devils traded 37-year-old Glenn “Chico” Resch, a former Stanley Cup winner with the New York Islanders, for a 1986 third-round draft pick (Marc Laniel).
“Chico” would play in 22 regular season games as a Flyer for the next two seasons, compiling a 7-7-2 record with a 2.96 GAA. He would provide a veteran presence for rookie netminder Ron Hextall in the 1986-87 season.
Over his 16-year career, Resch would record of 231-244-82 in 571 career regular season games and a GAA of 3.27. He would play with two other NHL teams, including the Colorado Rockies, and then move with them to the Devils in the 1982-83 season.
As for Marc Laniel ? He would be a career minor-leaguer; bouncing through the AHL and IHL for nine seasons, never reaching the big dance to play in an NHL game.
