PHILADELPHIA — He might not be allowed into the Hall of Fame this summer, but nothing's stopping him from getting onto the Wall.
Major League Baseball's Hit King, Pete Rose, is the current leader in fan voting on the 2017 Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame ballot, according to Sol de Margarita.
Rose, 75, is making his first appearance on the ballot after Phillies received permission from Major League Baseball. The 17-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds' Hall of Fame last season.
The all-time hits leader is among the following nine other eligible candidates: right-handers Steve Bedrosian, Larry Christenson, Gene Garber, Ron Reed, Rick Wise, infielders Placido Polanco, Scott Rolen, Manny Trillo and manager Jim Fregosi.
If inducted, Rose would be the 12th member from the 1980 World Series champion team, the first in franchise history, joining manager Dallas Green, general manager Paul Owens, catcher Bob Boone, pitchers Steve Carlton and Tug McGraw, infielders Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa and John Vukovich, outfielders Greg Luzinksi and Garry Maddox and broadcaster Harry Kalas.
Fan voting is open until March 15, where a selection committee will then decide who gets inducted among the top five vote-getters.
In five seasons with the Phillies from 1979 to 1983, Rose recorded 826 hits in 745 games, posting a .291/.365/.361 slash. He is currently banned indefinitely from the game for betting.
The Wall of Fame Night is scheduled for Saturday, August 12, before a home game against the division rival New York Mets.
